when the ncc-1701-d was destroyed, it crashed into a planet, but the ncc-1701 of abrambverse is a submarine-VTOL-intergalatic ship. spider is absolutely right that doesn't make any damn sense. even if we say "okay they can go faster than the speed of light" that doesn't make gravity or the atmosphere function any differently
star trek: the motion picture was a star trek movie, through and through. even though i didn't think it was particularly great, it wasn't a shoot-em-up-in-space. star wars came about and that challenged star trek, so we get star trek 2: wrath of khan. this was brilliant. it has some amazing stuff in it, about the genesis project, but also the shoot em ups that people now wanted to be dazzled by. but it still kept to its roots.
star trek first contact also similarly hit on great themes from the series (borg, time travel, sex with robots) but had a lot of action. i'm fine with a lot of action. i liked DS9 the best actually, and that was action-packed most times. star trek insurrection was more like a glorified episode of TNG, which, is great, but it was made for star trek fans.
and so there is the delimma... how can you justify the expense of a giant movie just peddling to the trekkies? you can't. so the options are, don't make a movie, or destroy the heart of star trek. well money is money right
so "star trek beyond" is the first post-abrams trek, and will be cowritten by simon peg. and according to this "Pegg and ("confessed trekkie") Lin are ready to take the NCC-1701 out on that Five Year Mission we've heard so much about." http://moviepilot.com/posts/3677714 i have high hopes for this. it's the 50th anniversary of star trek, and they are still making movies, which is awesome. and as spider noted, there's a tv series with CBS possibly in the works -- possibly with the "original prime timeline" (tos/e/tng/ds9/v). it's clear trek has staying power, even if it's not dazzling. i mean three seperate series of 7 seasons? what other show can compare? i think this new movie can keep some of the exciting elements abrams broguht, and take us back to the roots of star trek, gaining fans in the process. star trek should be highly philosophical. it should challenge viewers. and it should "make sense" (aside from the two fantasy elements of teleportation and FTL).
