I think she felt nothing at all. She locked him in because it was the most efficient way to neutralize him. That's he's probably going to be dead of thirst within a week, having suffered immensely before keeling over, didn't even phase her.
"...minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic..." is what they were going for. We created this new intelligence, ostensibly in our own image, but its actually something new, and alien...and we shouldn't anthropomorphize it. These things aren't us. And that's what made them interesting.
