The more I think about it, the more I can't believe Sicario didn't even get nominated. That movie was perfect in so many ways.

Kane, I mean she let him go. Why would she do that if she didn't have some sort of positive affection for him? I disagree with your assessment. Even pity is an emotion, which gives me hope for a happy and prosperous future subjugation.

I think she felt nothing at all. She locked him in because it was the most efficient way to neutralize him. That's he's probably going to be dead of thirst within a week, having suffered immensely before keeling over, didn't even phase her.

"...minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic..." is what they were going for. We created this new intelligence, ostensibly in our own image, but its actually something new, and alien...and we shouldn't anthropomorphize it. These things aren't us. And that's what made them interesting.

The whole twist of the film is the degree to which you realize how cold and calculating Ava really is. Consider the scenes where they stab Nathan. It's one of if not the most intimate means of murder and yet the shot envelops all of the actors as it unfolds. You see the knife slice into Nathan like butter and it's almost as if it's in slow motion - the robots cannot exert themselves in a fairly rapid motion. But examine the facial expressions of the robots as they do this - they're placid. It's meant to emphasize the degree to which they are detached from what they're actually doing. Ava, on the final stab, looks at Nathan inquisitively even - as if she's trying to understand what it is that she's doing. There is no sense of remorse, of pain, or of even noting the harshness of that means of attack. It literally looks like she's spreading butter on a piece of bread for the first time and is trying to process her actions. Study them.

If you think this movie somehow shows a compassionate side of the AI then I think you've missed the point entirely. The movie is a cautionary tale about creating life and the dangers of human emotion (or a lack thereof).
