Before I wade back into this, are we planning on discussing the potential future utility of such an account? What I mean is, do we all realize that banking, online banking, and availability of decent credit is going to be more and more important to the individual, moving forward? And can we reasonably foresee how the creation of a simple banking account could transition into a greater program, depending on the needs that arise in the future?
Conversely, are we going to consider the idea that if we simply make a few changes to the laws regarding overdraft, as Phosphide and IndependentProfessor suggest, the banks will simply make some small changes in order to comply with the law, while also completing ignoring the spirit and intent of the law - i.e. will they simply find another way to rape the poor? Following up on that, are we going to discuss the value of deliberately creating a competitive, cost-effective bank account, and how that might impact industry practices?
Basically what I want to know is if we are going to have an actual discussion at some point, or are the conservatives going to keep on pretending that all of their concerns haven't already been addressed many times over, by many members?
