Shouldn't be an issue for the federal government. States have different levels of violence and ways to treat it, compensate others for it, etc.

This is a slippery slope, the leading cost of death is heart disease and cancers, plus driving accidents. What makes gun violence any different than covering the costs of these individuals? We shouldn't get the federal government involved in compensation. Does it involve knife attacks, attacks with a baseball bat etc? So what if someone starts a fight, then gets shot and a few others get killed? Do we compensate based off the death and not the circumstances? Too many variables, too many issues for something that sounds simple in a thread like this. Do we only give compensation if more than 5 people die? Do Texas citizens have to pay for Chicago's record daily murders?

What you are calling for should only be accepted by local governments and states who get to make decisions for local issues. Outside of this, it's ridiculous and we shouldn't have any potential rewards for gun violence.

How are the leading cause of deaths relevant in a discussion about costs incurred by survivors?

My mistake I'm on my phone. Take out the heart disease and cancer part. What about victims of drunk driving? Do we compensate everyone's bills for accidents of any violent action? Like I said, what about knives, bats and other items used to kill Americans everyday? Or just guns because politically we get butthurt when someone is shot but we don't care when someone is hit by a drunk driver or beaten to a bloody pulp by their husband.

If you'd read my previous posts in this thread, I do not support ex's proposal. I just thought it was odd to discuss leading causes of death in this thread.

I think it goes without saying that victims of crime includes victims of crimes, not people who assault others and get shot in self-defense. I don't know why anybody would assume otherwise. Also, I'm not sure why fstar thinks we are talking about gun violence - but just to be clear, we are talking about physical and financial harm caused by a crime, whether that crime is felony drunk driving, murder, assault, rape, etc. I also have no clue what he means by rewarding gun violence...

As for the argument that this should be a state responsibility, I really don't see why. There was no justification given other than fstar doesn't care about victims in different states. Every American should care when a person is put into serious financial straits as a result of being victimized by criminals.
