I think we're missing the major point in all this.
I see no way that this will do anything but ESCALATE the problem. In every police station around the country this morning, the sergeant in charge was briefing his officers coming on duty, warning them to be extra alert for any problems, to be ready to defend themselves with deadly force, etc. And every officer in the country is going to have an extra-sensitive trigger finger for a while.
And, I don't blame them, either. If I were a police officer today, I'd be watching my back (and front) pretty damn carefully. After all, better to live today and be able to fight (a court case) tomorrow.
I'm not certain how we go about de-escalating this problem.
