I've been out for more than a year, promised myself I'd just read posts here, but there is no other place to talk about the election and commiserate because I'm abroad.
I was hoping for a Clinton blowout, not because she's a good candidate, but because Trump is an existential threat to US democracy. Plus the Republicans needed to confront their legacy of race-baiting rhetoric and "moral values".
But, I knew in my heart of hearts this is how a lot of Americans think. I felt it when I was insulted for being a "Mexican" (I'm not) by a group of other kids, or when I was labelled a terrorist after 9/11. But I also saw the impact of deindustrialization in the Midwest.
When Trump came, exploiting people's fears and anxieties, I wasn't surprised in the least. I always knew why he was "Teflon," despite his egregious comments literally verging on the strong possibility that he has committed sexual assault. I just hoped for a little bit more from people.
It's easy to break the system, a whole lot harder to fix it. Ive felt the revolutionary urge before. But we need a social movement, not a demagogue. This is what happens when you decimate Left politics, and take away any feasible alternative for ordinary working class Americans. Here's hoping Bernie doesn't throw in the towel on realizing the political revolution.
At least one craven party of hacks will have its reckoning tonight, the corporatist liberals at the DNC.
