patent extensions shouldn't exist. and there you have it. 20 years is enough. they will try to get the FDA to work faster, as opposed to currently extending it for 5 years because the FDA isn't fast, and then variety of exensions that could keep patent protections for near half a century

Dunno about all that. Company wil be dissuaded from investing in high risk high reward R&D - which typically takes longer at FDA stage - if there is no possibility they can get an extension.

Over the years, probably more public then private money has went into research. It seems the gov't is always handing out grants to research this and develop that. That makes it just as much public property as private.
