Saz just has a self-righteous attitude problem. He already freely admitted he would disrupt a classroom if a teacher didn't 'respect' him by giving him free time. Talk about being immature.

Yeah, if you stand up in the middle of class and just argue, argue, argue, I'm not legally allowed to smack you in the face or restrain you, but I can get you arrested. Where's the controversy?

In an ideal world I'd let students leave if there was nothing left to discuss, but I can't because I become the legal guardians of each teenager, and I'm not risking my job. Damn unionized teachers!

Students who excel shouldn't even be in high school after their first junior year semester. They should be at the local community college acquiring credit early. I can't 'let' you miss class though.

I had a great high school physics teacher. What made him great? 2 things that I remember.

First, he almost always had some off-the-wall story. Like the time that he said he built a laser at home and burnt a hole through his kitchen floor. Or how he once made so much gunpowder, that the FBI visited him (but he wouldn't give us the recipe).

Second, he would tell us why we needed to know things. For instance, when we were learning about torque, we all went outside, where he had set up a classroom with a chalkboard. And a go-kart on a stand with the rear wheels just above a table. He'd feed tennis balls into the space between the table and tire, and we'd watch them shoot across the yard. Then, we all had to figure out how fast the tennis balls were flying.

Helluva lot better than some mind-numbing Jack-and-Jill word problem in a book. Even the bad kids behaved in his class. And even the slackers made good grades.

my physics teacher did the same thing. every single lesson was applied to a real world application even if it wasn't something you'd have to do (judging height by dropping a known mass from the top of something and timing it for example)

Well on my last test all of my students got A's and B's. Lowest grade was an 81. For the other teachers in my department who used the same test, their averages were 82. Mine was 91. Very happy. One of my lowest-achieving students got a 91. I'm very proud. I made a bet that I would dress like (almost) anything they wanted if no one got lower than an 80. We'll see what they decide tomorrow.
