Marriage is a pretty important and crucial part of monotheistic religions - the morality and acceptability of reproduction and physical affection is buried behind the marriage firewall, and so people gain emotional attachment to that term. While you and I may think that this is a waste of time and money, it is important to recognize that there are many Americans who feel that one of their most important rites of passage has been demeaned and degraded by expanding the term to include any combination of consenting adults. If their constituents feel strongly about this, in sufficient numbers, I would be remiss if these representatives didn't put forward these bills, even though I understand that they are doomed for failure.
