I didn't follow this much. I typically try not to worry about things over which I have no control.
However, I see now that she was confirmed, in a tiebreaker by Pence. And, I'm not sure why I should be worried.
From the NY Times article (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/07/us/p ... irmed.html):
- has devoted much of her life to expanding educational choice through charter schools and vouchers
- Ms. DeVos’s full-throated support for charter schools and vouchers — which allow students to use taxpayer dollars to pay tuition at private, religious and for-profit schools
- Ms. Weingarten said, “That’s because DeVos shows an antipathy for public schools, a full-throttled embrace of private, for-profit alternatives
Now, I get why this is so controversial. It's the thought that we are depriving public schools of money. And, this may well be a valid concern.
However, when I hear "private school vouchers", what I think is "universal healthcare". Why? Well, under most proposed universal healthcare models, everyone is provided a basic level of care, free of charge (either through government-provided caregivers, or with public funds at private hospitals/doctors). But, if someone wants additional care, they can purchase additional coverage.
This is no different. It's universal education. Everyone is provided a basic level of education (funded by the Fed). And, if you want additional education at a private school, you can pay more.
So, how come the same people that want universal healthcare are against universal education?
