christianity and capitalism are essentially incompatible. any attempts to make them compatible results in patent hypocrisy.

No. We have never been a Christian nation. The First Amendment, and the specific clause in the Constitution prohibiting any religious test settled that argument in the beginning. We are a secular nation based upon individual human rights.
Less participation in organized religion has been the trend for many decades now, and has been the subject of studies on modern societal behaviors.
