West Texas

As a longtime resident of Texas, I'm kicking myself for not travelling out to the far western end of my state for so long. I spent a week with my family out there based in Marfa (Austin's baby cousin and home to the movie Giant) and spent a lot of time down in the Big Bend region, Ft. Davis, Terlingua, Balmoreah, McDonald Observatory, Marathon, Alpine, etc. f**k amazing, and surprised Big Bend National Park doesn't get the pub it deserves (nearly on par with the Grand Canyon imho). I also secretly crossed into Mexico for a bit and didn't die.

All those westerns you've seen (or even portions of No Country for Old Men) are realized out there visually, just f**k cool. If any of you want get a kickass Texas vibe, skip the cities and go out to that part of the state, it's totally worth it. The best vacation I've taken with my family.

Having never been to Texas, I always just assumed that the entire state was full of people who don't ever step out of the house without a 10 gallon hat on and say "YEEEEEEEHAW!!!" all the time while firing off pistols in the air to celebrate even the mildest of good news. You're saying it's only like that in the western part of the state?

I've spent a lot of time in West Texas, though not much all that recently. Last time I was in Big Bend was probably 04? But I've been backpacking there 7 times. It is amazing for sure. Doing that quick scramble up to Emory Peak is a blast every time. Great weather this time of year, did Spring Break trips out there three times, backpacking twice. But the views of the stars out there, really hard to understand until you see it. Was lucky enough to see Hale-Bopp when it came through '97 and the view out on top of a plateau in the desert was crazy awesome.

Glad that you got to go. I keep meaning to go again but I'm far from being fit right now (still recovering from broken foot and toes) and I want to be able to do some hiking next time I go so I'll definitely head back once I'm in better shape. Def post pics.
