Jordan is a Hashemite country, there was never any doubt about Hashemite rule. Syria is run by the Alawites, and the protests wanted them OUT of power. Given what has happened to the other religious minorities in Syria, it's more than logical for Assad to respond the way he did. He had no choice, you turn over power to Sunni's and they will wipe you off the map at the first opportunity. Literally everyone in the region knows this. Shocking you really think he could have made a few token reforms and the whole thing would have gone away. How naive.
You also seem to be operating on the incorrect assumption that this course of action has not worked for Assad. In fact he has wiped out just about every potential enemy he has, and will rule all of Syria in a short time.
