It's the "spoiled" votes that I'm interested in. Against the 31 million votes cast in total for both Macron and Le Pen, 4 million voters actually took the time to vote simply to say "f**k everything!"? 12%?

I wonder what the rate of that was over here, especially given the two most despised candidates in history going head to head.

It was a foregone conclusion that le pen would lose going into sunday's vote. If macaroni had a 4 pt lead and everyone said it was a foregone conclusion and was dumbstruck when that didn't happen... Well I would wager less people would vote "none of the above". It was safe to vote "none of the above"in the French election, or at least 4 million thought so

That said we had more options. Lots of people like myself voted third party, which is basically "f**k the two front runners". The libertarians put a dunce up for election and he did the best any libertarian has ever done. I think all together with third party plus null votes it's like 6 or 7% if votes cast though

Yeah, but we were told the same thing. Must have been two dozen major outlets announcing 99% odds for Clinton for weeks leading up the election. Even Nate Silver was calling it 70 something percent for Clinton, and that nerd's asshole never gives a millimeter. If ever there was a thing that could cause voters to throw their hands up in the air, its having pundits smugly assure them that its basically a certainty that Clinton wins, lololol all the way home.

Could be the lens over here is distorting the picture, and French voters on the ground had a more assured view of Le Pen as ridiculousness than we did, given our own ongoing...situation...but after Brexit and Trump...how forgone could it really be?

They actually examined the polls for le pen in France - French pollsters were wildly off. By 8 - 10 points...yes Macron won but those pollsters didn't fare well.
