if they take more than they contribute, how is that anything other than the pejorative selfish? and how would the loss of a drain on society be anything other than a benefit? if you just give them money for the precieved threat of what they could become then the terrorists have won

you're saying that our society would collapse if there wasn't government giving money to people to give money to other people? i don't believe so. of course social stratification is necessary as a proper form of motivation, but some people have managed to drop out of it all together. they have no motivation and do not contribute. how is their continued existence helping anyone? why should i subsidize it? because they subsidize some slumlord, possibly? well what does the slum lord do? he provides slums for the ballast? so... he's productive simply because someone has subsidized the existence of these other people. i am not sure that's really productive, and he cold do something else.
