Oliver gets under my skin for reasons that aren't his fault. You look at Simon Cowell, Gordon Ramsay, whatever the names of the various British reality TV stars who's job it is to loudly preach at Americans....eh. There is something deep down in our psyche somewhere that makes us enjoy being scolded by pretentious limey douchebags, and it's irritating in its regularity and predictability. It's a cliche.
It's not that Oliver doesn't do a good job, or that he's even trying to set himself apart from us as he executes his high energy rants. (And the writing is actually pretty good). It's just that he seems the least invested personally, and the least qualified to judge and bemoan.
On the other hand, Craig Ferguson literally has the Franklin "Join or Die" snake tatooed on his arm, and is more American than 90% of Americans. He can say whatever the f**k he wants to on my behalf with my blessing.
