As much as we'd all love it to the issue isn't going to go away and the US has ceded leadership to China.
On the other hand the world's biggest polluter which pledged to stop growing in pollution after 2030 may now with it's new leadership turn that around faster. So I think this isn't dire for the planet... It's worse for America.

So how does this work exactly. Is the withdrawal process staggered and we take steps over the next 4 years then are out entirely in 2021 or is it all at once in 2021?

Well it's not a real deal (wasn't a treaty) so we're just out. It was voluntary.
The thing is he could have done nothing and it would have had the same effect, apart from galvanizing the world against America part
Edit: holy shit how is this legal. How did we sign up for something that we need 4 years to get out of that wasn't a treaty
