Spending isn’t the overall issue. It’s the timing and way it’s spent. What’s added to the debt/deficit.

Do a graph that’s spending as a % government revenue. Is your graph inflation adjusted?

Tells you everything you need to know. Reagan, Bush Senior, and Bush Jr. added tremendously to US debt. Reagan, by the end of two terms, had added close to 20%. Bush Sr, who was voted out for being diligent about it, added 13% in one term. Bush Jr. added a whopping 27% during his two terms. Obama’s first term added 18.5%...during the worst recession in close to 100 years.

presidents are almost entirely irrelevant though, since congress has the power of the purse. surpluses pretty much only are shown in your graph while republicans were in power congress, it's part of why we hardly ever have surpluses, republicans have largely been out of power in congress
