Nearly every single major corporation (tech, marketing, social, etc) probably has personal data (opted or not) on most Americans. It’s like the statement about hacking, there are those who know they’ve been hacked and those that don’t know they’ve been hacked. In this case, Americans are giving up their personal info whether they know it or not. Anyone with a credit card can get marketing lists and get the information of millions of Americans in minutes.

in terms of tracking online, the only one that really groks me is amazon. but even then they want to continuously sell me TVs or some shit even after i bought them. "buy it again!" they'll say. No U

but i ain't on social media, and never have been. personally i don't do it because it annoys me how it basically allows everyone to keep tabs on you without having to actually talk to you. it seemed perverse for that reason, before i even thought about the mining of information. once i thought about that, it became even worse.

in Fahrenheit 451 the people are the ones who want the books to burn. the government isn't forcing this shit. the same as this facebook stuff: the people want it. what's great about this is that means there is a pretty easy solution to it

I am in the process of removing all of my social media accounts but unfortunately the nature of my work requires me to have an account so I can moderate various pages. So I may have to just create a fake FB account just for that. I'd love to make a clean break though...

a girl i used to know tracked me down once, 15 years after i had last seen or heard from her -- or any of our mutual friends. apparently she was pretty much determined to find out what the heck happened to me. she said i seemed like someone who didn't want to be found, but she was able to still figure it out with the limited information i had online and did email one of my email accounts. after like 2 emails about how things were and whatnot apparently she became disinterested and i haven't heard from her since. my point is even someone who has no social media presence can be tracked down to some degree, but only if someone looks (i think some email account had listed my real name somewhere... not anymore though). this is okay, and much better than just putting everything about you out there for the world to see and collect and come up with solutions for

We the remnants of PCF are probably old enough to cheerfully scale back or even end most of our social media presence without undue psychological strain. These kids though coming up behind us (God I got f**k old) grew up immersed in it such that it's basically their UI for interfacing with the world. An extension of their personalities. They won't be unplugging anymore than they'll be cutting off their arms.

I dropped Facebook years ago, great decision. But when I explain to people that no, not on Facebook they seem to respond either with A: Offense, since they think of course I must be lying. Or B: They look at me like I'm a space alien, assuming I must live in a bunker in the woods surrounded by burlap bags of beans and ammo cans. It's created professional problems on several occasions.

It's already far, far, too late.
