Adultery is not really in the same realm as sexual assault or murder or terrorism or genocide, so probably not necessary. But in general, I would argue that society changing its idols and whom it celebrates in this manner is a good thing. We don't want to be like Europe, caught up in the successes of the past while ignoring what has gone on in recent history.
I'm sure there are plenty of modern heroes that deserve statues, who did stuff like feed urban communities, or protect the environment, or whistleblow on illegal spying and data collection... You don't need stuff to be 100 years old to be meaningful.
For instance, I've noticed that my country does not, as far as I know, have a federal museum or historical society for Afghan War vets. But we have it for the Korean War and even I think Canadians who served in Vietnam. Instead of fighting over keeping statues of genocidal national figures, why not instead compromise by honoring modern heroes?
