Yes, Kane, context matters.
From 2012 to 2015, as a result of civil war "spillover," one Israeli citizen was killed and four soldiers were wounded.
By 2017, Israel had attacked Assad ~100 times. The widely reported strikes were on chemical weapons, but most were on regular weapon platforms. It had also deployed special forces to Syria, establishing infrastructure and buying an army, while deciding to establish a "buffer" zone to defend against the outrageous casualties being inflicted on them by the Syrian Civil War.
Then, after getting their ass kicked, Syria gets the Iranians involved. The Iranians march over and throw some rockets at Golan Heights, all of which either miss or are shot down.
The consequence is that Israel carries out the largest air strike it has in almost forty years, after convincing President Moron to throw away the Iran deal.
So, yes, this is history repeating itself. Good on you for sticking with it.
As for Israel, I have no idea why you insist on believing they are under serious threat. They are not. From a conventional perspective, they can beat up on the Arabs pretty damned well. They are also a nuclear-armed state who nobody thinks would chicken out if they had to use them. The Golan Heights is a strategically dominant position that they can defend for as long as they want. There is no need to grab more territory. But considering who is in charge of Israel, I think you are crazy not to understand what is happening before your eyes.
