Trump is most certainly a symptom of larger problems. American and Western problems. No one is really minimizing the impact. If Trump was an aberration it would be far more consoling. No, he is the ultimate expression -- so far -- of Fantasyland.

In terms of the impact it is having on American power? It is far greater.

Honestly, I don't know how much people have to tell Americans that their power is lessening before they listen. Europe, Canada, UK and most Asian countries are sick of your shit. Trump is getting pretty close to the final straw - better to align with China.

I think a larger problem is trust. Of course you never take a politician's word or be gullible enough to accept everything they say but there's usually something buttressing what they're saying (there's an intent there - something you can try to work out on your own). How do you trust Trump to do the right thing for the US when you have all of these coincidental actions taking place? And when he blatantly lies/obscures/or makes up stuff on twitter daily? The only way you can reasonably trust Trump is to say "he's just lying to all of us to keep our enemies at bay - he's being the 'mad king' and trying to be as unpredictable as possible to throw off everybody" and then accept that this is a good way to do politics domestically and globally. You basically just have to have "faith" in his abilities and discount just about everything he says and does.

And so when he needs the country to unify in the midst of a large threat should such a thing occur in the future I think the probability of that happening is pretty low because his word is meaningless.
