Philly is a typical Philadelphia person. Dont mind them they know not what they do. Having spent years here just be thankful they are very narrow minded and rarely leave the area.

Didnt know McCain personally but he put more on the line than most and seemed to try. Bit of a wackjob policy wise but a decent human being.

McCain's life and death should be a lesson to all Americans. He was a vicious and unrepentant murderer, as well as a coward - but also once a war hero and, according to many, a decent and personable man.

Over the past twenty years, he has destroyed his legacy and disgraced his country. Nonetheless, he always upheld a certain standard of behaviour.

Although he wasn't totally reduced to a groveling and pathetic man-shell until 2016 - "always a bridesmaid and never a bride" - his behaviour over the past several decades has largely eliminated whatever public value he may have once had.

At the end of his life, McCain was, in a very real way, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. He had a wonderful sense of decorum, he tried hard according to his moral compass, and he still achieved nothing more than a life better ended early. It is my firm hope that his body is burned in a garbage bin.

I respect McCain for what he endured in Vietnam, because I can’t imagine surviving and enduring that myself, much less having a high level career in politics afterwards. Cheers to you John.

However, can’t say I’m a big fan of said political career, but not enough to make me piss on his grave. I have a bit of a personal take on this because McCain was taken out by the exact same thing that took my father out, so i feel for his family on a personal level. It’s brutal.

Philly, the racist incident you refer to I hadn’t even heard of and had to look up the reporting of it in 2000. That was the only incident I found. It was clearly not a repeated pattern of behavior and there isn’t the least evidence that it informed any of his political policies.

I didn’t support 99% his political policies, obviously, but it must be said of him that, as a republican, he was one the best that was available. There are going to be republicans in the congress and one must want them to be the best available. I supported Bernie Sanders for the democratic Presidential nomination even after he came out in defense of the drone assassination program which was a great disappointment. Support for Hillary Clinton was also the ethically rational choice given the situation quite apart from the nearly infinite index of horrific policies she helped to orchestrate and support. McCain, for instance, was one of three republicans who was in opposition to the nomination of the torturer Gina Haspel to Director of the CIA. His colleague from Arizona and Rand Paul were the only republicans who voted no (McCain wasn’t able to vote due to the treatment for brain cancer). There were five democrats who voted yes.

One has to give credit to McCain for refusing an early release from the torture chamber in Vietnam until POWs held longer than him were also released. Yet it also must be remembered that he was flying bombing runs over the Vietnamese people in an illegal and immoral war. He also then supported the bombing of Cambodia after he returned which was a wicked piece of evil that helped usher in the Khmer Rouge. As an unrepentant hawk he was a catastrophically dangerous senator.

Now that McCain is gone who do you imagine is going to fill his Senate seat, a progressive?
