The numbers are from a rather thorough study done by George Washington University. PR didn't adopt that figure until after the study was published. The only way you get a number as low as 64 is if you only count people killed by actual drowning or flying debris or whatever during the storm itself. Usually, the vast bulk of casualties are a result of the aftereffects, and the trouble in PR was mostly a result of the collapse of infrastructure and transport. The people who died as a result of the storm as opposed to literally during it are still victims. And trump's real failure was in making no real effort whatsoever at addressing the problem.

Letting brown people suffer and die, even American ones, is only going to make his supporters smile. I don't think it's at all unfair to fit the treatment and disregard for Puerto Ricas in with the running theme we've been seeing towards Latinos generally, especially as FEMA funding keeps getting diverted to ICE.

He goes down there for an afternoon and throws toilet paper at people in front of cameras and then declares his response a great success. And now he looks back and grades himself for political points. Sorry, Galt. No way to defend this shit.

there is plenty to criticize the man for outside of this. i don't know why you want to blame "making brown people suffer" on him, when it was the very brown people in PR that are directly responsible for the death count. it's a corrupt place. fema did things like dropped off water, or the US government sent everything they needed to repair electrical, and it just sat out on runways because it was PR's job to deliver. they failed, for a number of reasons. probably because "brown people" amirite? i mean it's all about f**k race, isn't it

Sigh. Obviously, it's not all about race lol. But it's highly disingenuous to ignore that factor in the current climate, especially regarding trump, his supporters, and the fact that PR is a landslide Latino territory.

Goes without saying that PR is f**k up. But that is not an excuse to go through the motions, encounter problems, and then just say "f**k it" and walk away while declaring victory to the cameras.
