It's lettuce guys.
One of two things will happen if foreign labor isn't allowed to fill in:
- the farmer will change the crop to something that can be harvested using less labor (mechanization)
- the farmer will buy something that allows for mechanization to fill the gap (depends on the crop - not everything is easily picked by machine)
Bottom line: less jobs not more
We're just making the country less competitive in a given market/commodity while our competitors reap the rewards while also pressuring farms to modernize to the extent that they don't need to rely on outside labor (outside meaning labor at all - domestic and foreign).
