eric schmidt predicts that by 2028, which is only a decade away, the internet will be split into two, with one American-led internet and one Chinese-led internet

but i think what is most disturbing about this is that the chinese can push their internet with the belt and road initiative. they are already using debt tactics to control these counties. controlling the information they receive as well will lead to a dramatic changes, and, i expect, a return of people talking about "the second world"

pulling out of TPP just gets dumber and dumber everyday. but remember, donald trump is god's chosen instrument of wrath against our wickedness and decadence, and so of course it gets stupider and stupider

At this point, I'd argue a three-way split is conceivable. EU-US-China. EU is going off the reservation with internet regs and I don't see that stopping anytime soon.

With all the shit the EU has been pulling (apparently because they are super pissed they don't have their own Silicon Valley to smother out) I'd not be shocked if they ended up with their own safe space version of it. So maybe it breaks three ways in practice. On the other hand, the US tech industry is likely to just bend over and give the EU whatever they want. Market is just too big, and China too intentionally impenetrable.

while you're right that the EU is getting a bit ham fisted with regs, they aren't raised in a culture of stealing so they won't be able to "replicate" american search engines and whatnot like the chinese. i think the US-EU will come to some sort of equilibrium because as much as they want to regulate everything to prop up their own cottage industries they need american internet leadership here and will come around to that.

i do think spaceX's starlink should be pursued in part because of this reason. the US should subsidize it to get our message out across the globe. problems include that china will likely through people with such phones into forced labor camps and whatnot, but we can stave off chinese influence elsewhere at least

Hell, with our lol "Space Force" who cares about that treaty anymore? Wouldn't be the first time China has shot down a satellite, in any case.
