You have to realize that the men in charge of these ships were put through training programs i nthe late 90s-early 2010s. during this time, the training programs were redesigned so that instead of hands on training about how everything worked with real life training ships, they watched stuff on CD.
this is in combination with a mentality of you'll sleep when you're dead and turn 2 f**k, where you'd be working for literally over a day straight in many cases because of bad scheduling and streching resources because of how woefully understaffed our ships are.
that combination is deadly. (thankfully, they've changed the training back to hands on years ago, and recently have looked to rethink hgow they schedule, making sure people get enough time off)
the collisions were the end result of a lot of cost cutting measures that ended up costing us massive amounts of treasure and even blood, along with not offering enough incentive to join the military. i know we want to blame the chinese -- and the chinese should not be trusted -- but in reality we must look to ourselves
