they do it to steal everything because they have a culture of cheating. they think doing this is normal. they do it for our intellectual property and they sure as shit do it for our state secrets. recently the reveal of the hardware hack on servers is extremely concerning; trump is right that we should bring manufactering home from china for some things at least... and computer components? it's too important, and the chinese are too dangerous.

ships have been sailing at sea long before gps and radar and all that. you've got over a dozen people watching the surface literally looking for other ships. unless they are running in stealth mode you'll see it. even if the navigation got hacked they should have avoided the collisions is what i am saying, because the naval ship operates on the premise that those systems can fail. they don't put people on watch because there's nothing else for them to do

there's more than one person watching this shit. there's many lookouts, plus all sorts of other people whose entire job is to look at the horizon

Dude do you get how stupid it sounds to argue that a deck with several crew members and several lookouts all over the ship failed to notice a huge tanker heading right at them?

In these busy shipping channels there is a constant flow of huge merchantmen moving around the clock at a clip. The lookouts' failure wasn't in not seeing the commercial traffic...unless they were squatting down playing cards instead of looking, they almost certainly saw the shipping in question. The failure was in not recognizing the threat, and assuming that the bridge watch actually knew what the hell was going on.

Don't know if anyone here has ever stood night watches at sea...but it's f**k boring, staring off into the void trying to spot little dots of light. COLREGS say any boat is required to stand a dedicated eyeball watch at all times....doesn't mean it always happens. Not excusing it, but it happens all the time. Those big container ships and tankers are sometimes charging across the open ocean with nobody even on the bridge, much less looking out the window. Everyone is f**k around, playing games, watching movies, etc.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate. Combined with gross dereliction of duty and incompetence...and of course a simple failure of basic seamanship.
