As far as I’m aware - this is the first time a sitting member of SCOTUS made such a request. Even if he’s not subject to any ramifications this might be a message from Roberts to everybody else.

Say what you will about Roberts, but this isn't the first time he's demonstrated his status as a grown up.

They already have Soros. In any case, it is simply impossible to win without making a moral or emotional case. Either works. To give an example of a winning campaign that was both power oriented and able to connect emotionally, see Barack Obama's "hope and change."

Republicans win because they are better at harnessing the emotions of their constituency. It is as simple as that. They get people like jimmyz pissed off and so people like jimmyz vote. Hillary lost because even when she was calling everybody a deplorable, she did it in a way that no regular person connected with. She couldn't effectively piss us off (well unless the anger was towards her unparalleled incompetence at campaigning). She also couldn't cconvince anyone of her morals. The Kavanaugh thing is another great example - the Democrats harnessed the rage of the #metoo movement, demonstrated in front of the country how unqualified the nominee was AND invigorated their base.

Knowing that the only way Democrats win is when turnout is high, it is plainly obvious that motivating voters emotionally or morally is absolutely crucial.

He didn't have to do anything at all. He could have been a nakedly partisan piece of shit...but what I'm pointing out is that he at least has a (minor) history of putting the Country/Constitution first. We can't expect the same from subhuman trash like Kav. All he does is destroy the credibility of the SCOTUS by his despicable presence.
