i guess the question is, does trump actually think that he can with an executive order overturn at least part of the 14th amendment, or is he just doing this to put attention on immigration which he feels is a winner (and honestly, it's part of his greatest hits)

Trump has given up on the House and he's trying to win seats in the Senate. This is the GOP's last chance with these odds in the Senate for six years. 2020 and 2022 have the Dems with 11 senators up for vote vs 21 and 22 gop seats.

Just a wild guess here but between now and the general in 2020 facts won't be kind to Trump or the GOP. The GOP needs as many seats as it can get right now.

Also - I enjoyed listening to Yale professors this morning exhaustively exclaiming that what Trump says about his powers are comprehensively false.

I don't think this is as clear cut as everyone is pretending it is. I think the Court could very easily draw a line at permanent residency and it would be well within its bounds. This would be a huge victory for Trump. I didn't like the idea at first but the more i think about it the more I think that (1) its not clear cut and (2) this is a perfectly fair use of a President's powers in pursuit of their policy. If its unconstitutional let the courts strike it down, but outside of clear legal advice to the contrary (which I don't think Trump is getting) the president should not be in a position of deciding the constitutionality of these things first hand. Write the order, let the court interpret, and take it from their.

Fair play by Trump and again, masterful timing. I don't think the American people support birthright citizenship anywhere near the extent the left believes they do, so their could be a good fox in the electoral hen house for republicans.

The 14th was created to give freed slaves a path to citizenship, not so anchor babies could happen. As is now, our immigration policy is determined more by other nations then ours. Any guesses by anyone how many we can take in every year, legal or not? A few thousand , a million, a few million, the entire populations of other countries? seriously, how many? Remember, most will be low education, low skill. I know people don't like to hear that, but its reality.
