look, i'm a free trader, and want free unencumbered trade. but people like trump and his comrade sanders want not-free-trade. they want things like this to protect the american worker. meaning if that's all that is changed you are standing against labor

And I feel for Trump/Sanders here too - they aren't wrong on China. But we've gone about tackling this issue in such a hamfisted way that it's been counterproductive. Should've leveraged the West against China with a unified front. Now we have scattered bits of resistance but nothing that has thus far compelled China to comply with our demands.

Its not simply a matter of competition, it's that consumers don't want sedans anymore They want fuel guzzling SUV's and pickups. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are all taking serious hits as well, since of course they don't compete well in the US in these segments. Toyota is a poster child for this trend...posting large declines in sales overall while small SUV's and pickups are their top sellers.

I almost wish for $7 gasoline just to kick US car buyers in the nuts. Ford and GM giving up that market share won't be getting it back when fuel prices eventually start driving sales of sedans and compacts again.
