You seem to be under the impression that politics has become nastier. It categorically has not. In the 20s, farmers would drag judges out of their courtrooms and fake hang them for foreclosing on farms. Corporations would hire police officers to moonlight as union busters. The type of control exercised by the Democrats in places like Chicago doesn't exist outside of small rural Southern towns anymore.

These days, the Republicans voter suppress by doing things like requiring photo ID. Decades ago they did it by beating the shit out of you in the middle of the night.

Bipartisanship as you understand it is a propaganda technique created to serve the Cold War agenda.

6% of the US population could vote when washington was elected, but you're complaining about having to show an id to vote (while also complaining that you don't have to have an id to buy a gun) -- something basically every country does -- is massive voter suppression the country has never seen

I believe we have a problem with voter suppression, however, I have no inclination toward invoking some supposed good old days where things were so much better. As Galt points out, there was far less enfranchisement at most points in our history.

sure and i agree that in states where you need to register and its hard to register for some reason, yeah, it's pretty much trying to keep people from voting. but i've never registered to vote in my life and i've voted in every election i wanted to (and it's been at least 10, I think; i wasn't trying to be clever that i didn't vote because i didn't want to)
