I agree with Kane. There is no appearances angle, the US and Canada are still perfectly aligned. If anything this helps the Canadians, because it makes clear this decision lies with the US and Canada is going though the formal motions required of it by treaty. It also makes it slightly more clear that this was just a legal matter - the warrant was issued back in August and it just now seems to be coming to Trump's attention.

Make no mistake, they are going after you because you are weaker. If they stepped to us like imagine what trump would do. He isn't above taking hostages and I'm sure there are enough clever minds still at Justice that they could make this happen in a constitutional way (provided Trump doesn't run his mouth). Canada...well Canada can't do anything and the Chinese know this.

Also, I should point out that the idea that China will ever believe that the reason this happened is because of the rule of law is naive to the point of insanity. One, because that isn't how anything they know about politics and law actually works, and two, because POTUS just gave them every reason to believe he is operating with the same methods they do. None of which puts Canada in a great place when they try to explain why they are imprisoning or arresting the CFO of the largest telecom in China.
