i'm not a luddite and minnesota contains no tundra. it barely even has tiaga, but i do love the tiaga. and there's plenty of other awesome places, but there's so many in america i just don't see it worth my time to deal with eurotrash condescendingly talking about how americans have no culture as they take it all in like a sponge and appropriate it as their own.
i think dylan is conflating "cultural relativism" (that you should judge a person based on their culture not your own culture and spider is don't no help with him just stating it is true while neglecting to explain the difference) with the fact that some cultures are awful. take for example, mesoamerican aztecs. these people didn't have chattel slavery like the kind arabs exported everywhere, but instead they took whom they captured and killed them. by the thousands. in ritual sacrifice. a truly disgusting culture, and we can excuse the spainards for thinking that it was god's vengeance that smoteth them since they were so clearly deserving but it was really just smallpox
Americans learn only from catastrophe and not from experience. -- Theodore Roosevelt
My life has become a single, ongoing revelation that I haven’t been cynical enough.
