Interesting that Ethiopia won't release the black box data to Boeing, or the FAA. The people who know the least about what's going on are the ones best qualified to figure it out. Sounds logically consistent with the rest of this episode.

Yeah it's a possiblity that Ethiopian figure heads don't want to look embarrassed on the international stage after claiming their pilots got the necessary training after the Indonesian flight.

they are "black boxes" kind of like "black sites". they were secretive and used by the military to gather information. it was a colloquial term (and those boxes used to be black to be non reflective and they housed radar and other top-secret things), and then when civilians started used them they were made bright orange because it's not supposed to be secretive. they've always been orange, since the first black box was installed on civilian airplanes
