Our oil isn't cheap...

Saudi Arabia can extract light sweet crude right out of the ground. Ours involves fracking - is more labor intensive and requires more resources. We added supply to the market and that affected prices but there is a reason why fracking has been hovering as of late - the ppb has been around $50 - $60 which is near break even for frackers. Saudi Arabian barrels are profitable as low as $8 a barrel - their issue isn't extraction it's the budgets they make and how much they rely on oil sales.

If you don't put import controls on that and we can't export our oil our ability to impact the larger market is nil which means OPEC can take control of it again and change the price based on output. And if we're not importing anymore then that's excess right there - our former consumption goes unused and then dictates pricing until supply stabilizes with the new equilibrium of demand.

I don't think they'd allow the price the skyrocket and with our consumption cut out they'd have plenty on hand. We still import plenty of crude oil

That isn't the point, nerd.

The point is that we can produce enough oil to tank the commodity that these countries rely on, the Western world can streamroll any of them, and we're sitting here letting them dictate terms.

It is disgraceful. Goddamnit. Totally unwilling to take advantage of our own position, even if the long-term benefits show.

It is one thing to decide to be sensitive about our own domestic society. We can try crazy ideas like free college or reparations or LIKE GREEN ENERGY MAN. It is another thing to be a bunch of bitches when it comes to geopolitics.

The Saudis and ilk can get in line with Western ideals, or we'll open up the pipelines and tank them overnight.

Don't let The Donald permanently skew your picture of Western society.
