21 years for Breivik

the guy who killed 77 people was sentenced to 21 years in prison

now i know norway is bigger on rehabilitation than punishment, and i agree with their methods in many cases, actually
but this is not right
it's immoral to not execute this man immediately

instead he gets their most severe punishment, 21 years in prison.
and it's not what the state wanted! the state wanted to call him insane, he was the one arguing he was sane...

he's going to prison for 3.25 months for each of his victims... it's disgusting how norway is acting in this

From what I understand most of that period is going to be spent in isolation.

Though I can't cite any studies off hand, its often the case I believe that extended periods (as in years) in isolation produces a state of dementia in the subject.

Considering the gravity of his crimes. I would suggest that there are worse punishments than a quick and relatively painless death.

Yeah but even after 21 years they still don't have to release him.. Correct? They can, and probably will hold him in jail forever..

Especially after his Nazi salute today when sentenced..

But then maybe he'll find God and fool everyone in 20 years.

I think it would be wrong to criticise the sentence before it's fully been served. I know it's a long time away but only then can we truly judge whether this was really an acceptable sentence.

We have similar laws in Denmark (our max is actually lower at 16 years), and it works. Sure there are a few very rare cases like Breivik who end up in jail for life, since the sentence can be extended if needed. But for the most part people aren't the same after spending over a decade in prison, and it is possible to rehabilitate most criminals, including some killers.

Try comparing crime and recidivism rate from the US with those in Norway, then ask yourself who has the more successful justice system.
