It's gonna take a big event for us to take Climate Change seriously. We will definitely get that at some point and it will be tragic.

Not just flooded homes. Not a couple dozen dead or missing. Thousands upon thousands. And we will still have those claiming it's just normal weather.

They got f**k demolished but turns out Hurriance's aren't that bad if your infrastructure isn't complete shit and the levees hold. Going to f**k up the economy though, 90% of Gulf Oil Production is offline, the biggest liquid bulk port in the US is completely f**k, and while the NO levees seem to have held, others didn't so there are a lot of towns going to be completely wiped out. I was supposed to have a layover in New Orleans on Sunday as well, very very glad I assumed the worst for the Cajuns and rebooked my flight early last week. Expect crime to skyrocket in Texas and Georgia.

Also makes you realise what a preventable disaster Katrina was. It really didn't have to be that bad if they built those levees and flood walls properly and more than 5 feet (fwiw they are all 12-15 ft minimum now). Also, classic Louisiana, spend no effort trying to evacuate people and then send in the military to shoot looters after the storm. Even shit for brains Florida does not f**k around with these storms and has MANDATORY evacuations in place very early. I-10 was a f**k wreck - infrastructure bill is supposed to put a new highway through the south - this thing would save lives because there were thousands of people who barley made it out stuck on the roads. We can't really stop the bad storms but its critical we have the infrastructure in place to keep a bad storm from turning into a f**k tragedy. Kudos to the Army Corps though, it does seem the levees they built after Katrina held (although many were topped), so they can do this shit properly with the right funding and directions from our asshat politicians.

Yeah so far it's looking alright.

As far as the highway stuff goes that's a double-edged sword. It creates induced demand - you've installed yet more infrastructure with which to develop additional housing and transportation which will eventually lead the same problem - congestion. What would really help these areas is improved mass transit - this would also help address the mobility of those less economically secure.

end federal subsidies for flood insurance and this whole problem mostly goes away. make people completely unable to afford to live in places like this and they won't be able to live there, then, since they won't be living there, oh well it flooded gator infested waters through the abandoned city of new orleans
