Ok - how about we see some criminal charges now? Restore my faith in the judicial system.

It will be impossible for justice to be served in this case. As far as I know, there is no legal statue that would allow for the execution of those family members involved, and the crimes they have committed are so large and overwhelming, that the death penalty is all that could suffice. I say this as a person that is not generally in favour of the death penalty. I just understand that the punishment must fit the crime, and there is no prison sentence that would fit this crime.

I suppose that's true. But then these are also wealthy people that have always known getting what they want and having access to the best of everything. Along with a fall from grace I can imagine it would be hard for them to adjust to the reality of prison without the possibility of parole. The mental anguish would never be enough but it'd be something.

They aren't going to jail this is a civil matter. The question is if the 4 billion settlement in bankruptcy stays other civil claims, or if those other civil claims can still be brought. It's just a matter of money, Sacklers settled for 4 billion but a good part of the claimants want much more (noting the Sacklers pulling 10 billion out of the company). They aren't going to prison, but they could now face personal financial consequences for their misdeeds.

I mean its not nothing. This could be the difference between the Sackler's walking away from this as multibillionaires, or walking away dead f**k broke. A criminal conviction was never going to happen - they settled the Civil claims because it's not a slam dunk pursuing them in court. Civil claims have a lower burden of proof than criminal, so as a general rule if you can't get your way in civil court you aren't going to get a conviction in criminal court. There is actually the risk now the Sackler's refuse to settle and prevail (in whole or in part) in court, REDUCING their damage awards. I think the expectation though is without this liability shield, they will be sued into oblivion by a basically endless class of claimants, as they should be.
