I mean its not nothing. This could be the difference between the Sackler's walking away from this as multibillionaires, or walking away dead f**k broke. A criminal conviction was never going to happen - they settled the Civil claims because it's not a slam dunk pursuing them in court. Civil claims have a lower burden of proof than criminal, so as a general rule if you can't get your way in civil court you aren't going to get a conviction in criminal court. There is actually the risk now the Sackler's refuse to settle and prevail (in whole or in part) in court, REDUCING their damage awards. I think the expectation though is without this liability shield, they will be sued into oblivion by a basically endless class of claimants, as they should be.
