After such catastrophic intelligence failures in the past this one, they told the world the intelligence and then exactly what was said would happen, happened. Yes, the US got it right. Yes, the US is redeeming itself. Yes, the US leadership on this is very good, and yes, the Germans suck.

If numbers are correct Ukraine might have lost territory with the blitz but are inflicting more casualties than sustained at this point. With enough javelins they could hold on so long this becomes protracted and terrible for Russia *by itself* without sanctions

That said I'm hopeful for ukraine. Georgia, Syria, Chechnya, etc have all shown russia is incapable of invading and holding territory even against unprepared and weak nations. Ukraine has been fighting a guerilla war for almost a decade and is backed by some of the western world's best equipment. Equipment I think its important to mention that was designed to be used in the plains of Eastern Europe against the Russian military. This is a blunder on Russias part and as casualties mount and Ukraine holds out the demoralizing effect on Russian soldiers and society is going to be palpable. I'm not going to pretend this is going to lead to a new russian revolution but this very well could put putin in a dangerous position domestically especially with the military and the oligarchs.

I want to see a total embargo. Enough pussyfooting around. Nobody in the world should be able to do any business with Russia until every square inch of Ukraine has been returned. If India and China continue on, they get cut off too. There is no room for negotiation here.

I think there's way too much optimism around here about the West's response.

Nobody in the West gives a shit about Ukraine. Nobody gives a shit about cute Ukrainian kids, sweet Ukrainian old ladies, or swinging dick Ukrainian soldiers...or anyone else getting fragged.

What they care about is the recovery of their economies as they emerge from the shadow of COVID.
They care about Russian oil, Russian gas, and Ukrainian coal, steel, and wheat. Whatever gets the supply chains closer to restoration is the priority.

The world didn't give a shit about Crimea, Donetsk, or Luhansk...and they don't give a shit about the rest of the country either. They don't care who's running it as long as it's economic value remains integrated into the world economy.

It's only a matter of time before Germany reverses on Nordstream 2 and the spice starts to flow through it. Of COURSE those clowns won't cut Russia out of SWIFT. Why chop off one of Putin's arms if it means singing the hairs off their finger in the process?

The only thing that can really hurt Putin in Ukraine is Ukrainians rolling up their sleeves and fighting. But with the sort of wild force differential in play here...nah. They'll come to an agreement for Putin to take Eastern Ukraine.

Or hell, maybe Putin truly is insane and is willing to take the whole country and dig in for a bloody occupation.

You're really overestimating the Russian military. They're doing horribly in a conventional sense and the guerilla fighting hasn't even started. This has already been a strategic failure for Russia. Occupation and client state status is pretty much their only option if they want ukraine to not instantly join nato when this is over with and there is no way theyre capable of doing that. Finland is close joining nato now because of this. The economic damage even if twmporary is going to be severe. Plus the western response doesn't need to be altruistic. Javelin, LAWs, second by second Intel, AA systems. That doesn't need to be given altruistically it just needs to be given and it's all currently in transit or already there. This is discounting covert operations and force multiplying operations from western special forces. I dont think zelensky or ukraine cares if this stuff arrives with a love note.
