"Nation states perform better when subject to external competition" isn't some grand insight that requires Chinese or American citizenship to comprehend.

The problem isn't the various vague, loose generalizations you've put forward. For instance, saying that increased aggregate GDP is related to population growth isn't controversial, or incorrect. It is just without real meaning when the next logical statement is that military prowess and diplomatic power is determined by population.

China has had proportionally far greater population than any Western power for centuries. And yet it wasn't until lately that they became great. The UK and the US both were at the peak of their military and diplomatic power without being even CLOSE to the population of China or India. Hell, Germany was very close to kicking the shit out of Europe AND the United States with only half the population of just the US!

Further, why has China become great? Due to the productivity gains and technological advancements created and provided by the West, in order to ship products to... the West! The military equipment they use is stolen wholesale from Russia and the US, both nations with a fraction of their population.

Essentially, saying population is the only true asset of a nation state is one of the most idiotic things ever written on this board.

Here is another great example: a few posts ago, Saz was talking about how China doesn't believe they could win a war in Taiwan because they couldn't win a nuclear war with the US. Further, that they believe the US would use nuclear weapons to win a war against them, including glassing their entire country if it got to that.

He is now arguing that great powers like China don't view external threats like the US as existential threats.

This just three decades removed from the Cold War, which was cold precisely because the USSR and the US viewed each other as an existential threat, and had the actual ability to destroy every major population center in each country.
