They will be unable to pass a statute codifying Roe into law without the Senate overriding the filibuster, and obviously packing the court is well beyond their ambitions.

Meanwhile, Republicans, through unelected judges, are going to strip 50% of Americans of a basic civil liberty against the wishes of 70% of the population. They didn't even bother to do it in a backhanded way - straight up f**k you, roe and Casey are overturned. Lmao they would never! also if this draft opinion (which is a draft, so I assume Alito put it out for debate so I'm not saying it's final) is the final, then it is actually far more significant than simply Roe. it guts everything of protections applied against the states. it must be part of the nation's "traditions" and no, not traditions from the last two centuries only traditions from when the United States was a baby nation (with the exception of stare decisis, obviously that tradition is garbage).

Democrats are so f**k useless. if this doesn't result in a bloodbath for Republicans in November they are completely hopeless. the dog has caught the tail. I will admit that I didn't think they would be so stupid as to do it, since it's such a winner politically to constantly bring up, but they did it the absolute madmen. but hey, maybe apathy will still keep them going.

I know we follow the news/politics more than the general public but as Galt pointed out this should have surprised nobody. I wasn't surprised - I think the more interesting aspect of this is the leaking of the draft. Right now consensus on the right is that some "liberal" judge leaked this but I think it's more likely this was leaked by Roberts or somebody on the right to test the waters.

Maybe Roberts leaked it because he's worried about maintaining stability/credibility of the court?

Susan Collins is either dumber than Trump or a f**k remarkable player in the politics game.

Personally, I think she is totally playing the dumb card masterfully here. She HAD to know what these justices were saying was outright bullshit. I do not believe, for a f**k second, that she didn't know they would do this. Her aides, constituents, TRUMP f**k SAYING SO PUBLICLY, all had to be keying her in that these last 3 justices were going to vote to overturn RvW. The RNC too!

There is absolutely ZERO possibility she was actually this clueless unless she has the self-awareness of a rotting cardboard box.

What she can now do is gasp and clutch pearls and tell her voters that this shocks her, meanwhile BAU and life goes on, and she literally has to do NOTHING to still get support. She gets to continue to play the moderate card and get votes from lefties in her area because "oh, she's so moderate! Did you see what she said about how the RvW decision shocked her?" and Republicans will vote for her because there's an R next to her name.

Of course Democrats aren't going to codify this into law. They can't get anything passed.

The only thing I'm not sure of is potential court packing. I don't know if the Dems even have time to do it before 2024 election cycle. Obviously doesn't help the situation that is about to happen, but if they do try and pack the USSC, you can sure bet the next Republican president will raise the number by whatever number needed to give them the majority. And on and on. I can't possibly see Biden actually doing it because Dems are afraid of doing anything at all except lip service. Plus they know there's still a very good chance they will lose it all in 2024 and anything they do now will come back on them 10x in 2025.

It weakens the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, and that's reason enough. No matter what happens now - this decision is formalized or not - the takeaway is that the SC has bowed to pressure from one lobby or another.

You've got protests kicking off over something that hasn't even happened yet. The decision is being torn apart without any decision having been made.
