Well, I think you may be underestimating the number of Anglophiles over here, and maybe also the scale of British impact on media. I look back over my own personal taste in music for example and it tends to be dominated by British musicians (Queen, Led Zep, Clapton, Stones, Floyd, Elton John), half of a my favorite actors are British as well. They're all over the damn place. For quite a while there, we couldn't seem to have a talent show on TV without an asshole from the other side of the pond pissing on everyone. Jaime Oliver and Gordon Ramsay (among others) are very high profile in the cooking show craze, and it seems a great number of films and and TV shows seem to spontaneously include a token brit cast member.
For a country on the other side of the briny gulf with 5 times fewer people to contribute, the UK has made a completely disproportional media impact over here. We possibly tweaked out harder over the whole Charles and Diana thing than anyone, and people are still obsessed with the royals. Its all over our tabloids as well.
As to the media saturation, well. Sorry about that. Truly. But damn if our entertainment industry isn't goddamn tremendous. I think the reason there is less crosstalk is because UK media tends to be far less prolific (number of episodes per season, marketing, etc) and less impressive in terms of production values (a matter of budget, not talent).
(And Doctor Who just isn't jack over here. God I hate Doctor Who.)
