Lil bit, what you need to realize, is that here in the USA, the conviction of rape carries penalties LONG past the day they get out of jail.
1. They are put on long-term probation which is increasingly hard to abide by, making it more likely they'll end up back in jail.
2. They are put on sex offender registries, requiring them to notify neighbors, have their names and faces in the local paper, etc etc. This gets people killed, prevents dads who later marry their "victims" and make babies with her from going to their kids school functions, living anywhere near a school, playground, bus stop, etc.
3. The accused is tainted for life. Their reputation is ruined. They will be VERY hard pressed to find a job. Not finding employment and winding up homeless is a recipe for re-offending, which I might add, is lowest among sex offenders than any other group except murderers.
That's why I stand behind the accused, and "taking an accusation seriously" does NOT mean changing "innocent until proven guilty" to "guilty until proven innocent." You have to be very careful with that attitude. Your feminist attitude screams "If she said she was raped, since studies show so few false rape claims are real, it must be real."
That ain't how we play the game on this side of the pond, or it shouldn't be, anyway.
