One problem you have here is that a lot of Latinos are very socially/culturally conservative as well. Don't forget that GW Bush was making big gains with them by 2004. It's the immigration stuff that they hate about the GOP, not the abortion/gay marriage stance. So if the GOP drops that social conservatism, does that lose some natural support from the Latino community? This is obviously an oversimplification of Latino voters across the country, but it certainly is relevant in some cases.
