serious answer time
for me it would be the era of the roman republic. i think most people would say the empire but it was nothing but 400 years of pure chaos and dysfunction. the republic was a well oiled machine and things just...worked efficiently. it was a tremendously interesting period of time. something that i think is even more interesting is that one can draw quite a few parallels between the end of the republic (gracchi through caesar) and modern day america. people often use the fall of rome and say america is heading down that road, but they're morons. the fall of the empire is nothing comparable to the US right now. but the fall of the republic? the inability for two factions to get along and the turmoil the state faced through the war of personalities? that's very similar. eerily so, in fact.
