The rich should pay more simply because it's good economics.

But if you must have a moral argument, they should pay more because they have more to lose if the gov't falters. Consider it wealth insurance.

Oooh, so they should pay more because they have more? I thought we already had a progressive tax system, as I already pointed out.

I'd say that the richest 20% paying almost 70% of all federal income taxes is pretty much "paying more because they have more."

But answer this question if you don't mind: If you taxed all Americans 100% making over 60,000 a year it would come to 5.2 trillion. That still would not pay off the debt, still would not fix the problem. So my question to you is.....what else should be done?

Fairly certain most 'liberals' or even socialists on this forum have articulated that they favor:

Cuting military spending by at least 25%.
Raising Social Security benefits to age 70 or getting rid of the cap on withholdings.
Freezing non-defense spending on education, agriculture, etc. Science and NASA are the only exceptions I've seen.
Paying down interest and debt ratio.
Creating additional income brackets for those making over $500,000, $1,000,000, etc. while lowering other tax brackets.

Other than progressive taxation, health care, and military spending, the liberals and conservatives on this forum aren't that distinguishable in regards to the fiscal cliff. And frankly progressive taxation is a more reasonable approach towards sustaining prosperity and lowering the debt.

1. Raise taxes on $250k+
2. Create new brackets at 500k, 1 mil, 5, mil, 10 mil.
3. Dividends and Capital Gains aligned to income after $150k, no tax on CG under $40k total taxable income
4. Raise Payroll Cap
5. cut military spending
6. create infrastructure spending and help states keep teachers/police/etc
7. eliminate carried-interest and other loopholes, cap deductions.
8. Cut some other unneeded spending TBD
9. cut corporate rate to like 25% while removing deductions
10. cut oil and ethanol subsidies

Do those and you'll see both our economy grow and deficits drop over the next few years.
