The decline of religious affiliations isn't so much due to people rejecting God more. It's that modern times offer more substitutes to what the churches and temples traditionally offer. The sense of community offered by the church is replaced by other organizations like hiking buddies or comedy clubs. That's why traditionally bigger cities tend to have less churches per capita. Other things offered by the church, such as self-esteem despite not able to get sex (since the church painted abstinence as being more holy) is now replaced by the ability to get sex. In short, the decline of churches isn't due to God being any more ridiculous than before, it's due to the church having more competition than before.
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.
