Why does the definition even matter? We're talking about a private ceremony that (for some reason) intersects with politics. The problem with government getting itself involved in all kinds of shit is that once they do, it has to set terms, terms set by Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or liberals, idiots or savants. Either way, one group is legislating its morality onto the other.

I generally agree but some kind of government condoned method by which we legitimize and give power to these sorts of relationships is needed.

Depends on context. There is literally no difference across races but men and women are different in ways that are sometimes relevant.
