It's pretty simple. The Democrats are politicians, and behave as such. The Republicans are buffoons, and behave as such. Only fools or cowards would support the Republicans. Unfortunately, there are many fools and many cowards in the United States. As for the rest of you, good luck.

In national American politics, the broadest explanation of why Democrats are a better choice than Republicans currently is that the Democrats are serious about governing and the Republicans are not. This does not mean that the Democrats have serious solutions to every problem, or that they don't get dragged down into silly partisan proxy wars. But they are serious about governing and agreeing on policies that acknowledge reality. You have far too many Republicans who believe they can serve their country and conservative principles by taking a wrecking ball to the current system, but that's not a serious attitude towards governing, given that our system is decidedly one of incremental change. It especially isn't a serious way to look at governing when you don't control the Senate or the White House.

I do want to also acknowledge that not every Republican in the US government is so bad about this. I really believe that John Boehner, for all that I may dislike about him, would push for a few reasonable things he wants in every major legislative debate, and then cut a fair deal with Obama and the Senate. But the fact that he's speaker and yet he's perpetually struggling to be in a position to deliver votes for anything like that speaks to the problem.

I think the largest problem is the winner-take-all mentality and system we have.

We need a proportional system, to allow third parties and independents more access, and in turn, more collaboration will be needed, and become the new norm.

But it will likely be just slightly easier to do that, than it was to end slavery.

They did away with third parties when someone realised they could limit the competition.
